HISTORY OF SCHOOL

The history of our school begins in 1949, when the educational institution: Primary and Secondary Schools with Additionial Teaching of the Belorussian Language in Hajnowka was founded. One should know that at that time in Poland there were only 50 schools teaching the Belorussian language (with only two secondary ones amongst them). The school in Hajnowka was located in a building in Pilsudskiego street number 3. It was built in 1936, and originally housed primary school, that existed till 1965 (with an interval lasting from 1941 till 1944). In the school year 1944/45 also Public Belorussian Gymnasium operated there.

Originally there were only four classes in the secondary school. In September 1963 the second division of classes was introduced. On 19 April 1964 the school obtained a special character owing to receiving a standard. In 1988 three new first classes were organized and a lot of new pupils started attending this school. In the school year 1993/94 there were four first classes and the next year one more was added. Throughout the existence of the school art has played a very important role. As a result, in 1972/73 a girls band was created. The band participated not only in school social events, but also in various festivals of Belorussian songs. Since 1979/80 there were two bands operating at school: „Girls Tunes” and a vocal– instrumental one. The latter was named „Hajton”, and after renewing its line-up – „Hajton 2”. „Hajton” won first prize in the finale at the festival of Belarussian songs in Bialystok. It was also a guest at the festival of Ukrainian songs in Gdansk. Since 1995/96 the band “Zniczka” has been the follower of the music tradition in school.

In the secondary school also sport takes an important place. A physical education teacher Mikołaj Wróblewski made a great contribution to this. The team of volleyball arranged by him was unbeaten in the school year 1966/67, and it started to be well known in the country (3-rd place in the semi-finals of the Championship of Poland in Lublin in the school year 1970/71).

In order to function well the school must be led by reliable people. This responsibility used to rest (and still rests) on the succeeding headmasters. They were in turn: Bazyli Litwińczuk (to 1950), Sergiusz Soroka (to 1957), Anastazja Tropak (to 1968), Aleksander Iwaniuk (to 1971 and in the years 1981- 1991), Włodzimierz Stepaniuk (to 1981), Bazyli Bazyluk (from 01.03.1972 to 31.08.1972), Bazyli Dąbrowski (1991-1992) i Eugeniusz Saczko (from 1992).

The first congress of alumni took place in 1985 during the office of Aleksander Iwaniuk as the headmaster. The year 1991 was another turning point for the school. It was then that a significant change of staff took place. Ten teachers (with the headmaster) retired. Young teachers (in the majority graduates from this school) took over their places. Another change was the start of building a new didactic complex (nearby the old building). It was ready to use in the year 1993. Schoolmess started its activity in autumn 1994. In the school year 1996/97 the school obtained a new gym.

The new facilities attracted new pupils, which resulted in the increase of the number of sections, and in the creation of theme classes. In the school year 1993/94 a biology-chemistry class was introduced, in the school year 1994/95 it was supplemented by a mathematics-physics class, and in the school year 1997/98 by the one orientated towards humanities. In connection with the increase of the number of sections, in 1996 the vice-headmaster position was created.

The year 1993 is also the beginning of the existence of the Belarussian Affairs Club in our school. This club was organized by a history teacher and the chairman of the Belarussian Association in Poland - Eugeniusz Wappa.

Since the foundation of the school there has been many laureates of different subject contests: the Russian language (first time in the school year 1974/75), knowledge about Poland and contemporary world (1983/84), the German language (1986/87), mathematics (1987/88) and the Belarussian language (first time in school-year 1995/96).
